Warren Miller’s — Snow Riders
1 eps. x 96 min.

Spectacular shots of snowcapped peaks and extreme skiers gracefully defying gravity, not to mention common sense, are the highlights of this entertaining video from the venerable guru of skiing movies, Warren Miller. Sparing no expense, Miller's film crews span the globe, shooting snowboarders careening down absurdly steep Alaskan peaks, ski guides helicopter over to remote slopes in British Columbia, and hardy (and uninhibited) Scotsmen who boldly catch some "big air" in kilts. Snow Riders is fraught with offbeat humor, including shots of a snowshoe race that could have been filmed by Mack Sennett, and footage of face jumping, the oddball diversion of hurling oneself off Alpine glaciers and parachuting to earth. Miller's gentle narration, replete with trademark corny remarks reminiscent of old movie newsreels, mixes with a musical soundtrack of contemporary rock that is often uncannily synched with the astounding footage of extreme skiing. While this video is primarily a treat for those who love to ski, the beautifully photographed nonstop action makes the production hypnotically entertaining for those who have never ventured near the slopes.go to top

Warren Miller’s — Snowrider 2
1 eps. x 95 min.

Opening with a nightmarish montage of an avalanche, Snowriders 2: The Journey Continues, from the master of ski films, Warren Miller, quickly transforms into an exuberant celebration of downhill glory. In Miller style, gorgeous footage of some of the world's most skillful skiers tackling the world's gnarliest slopes is combined with intelligently chosen rock music to create an entertaining mix. Miller's film crews shoot skiers in the Alps of the South Island of New Zealand, track Americans making a lengthy pilgrimage to tackle the remote and forbidding slopes of Kazakhstan, and follow a tattooed and pierced snowboarder from his apartment in Greenwich Village to Killington, Vermont. For those wild souls who find skis and snowboards too tame, the video also features heart-stopping footage of cheerful maniacs careening down ridiculously steep mountains on, what else, mountain bikes. As if that's not enough, there are also those who up the ante by descending glaciers in kayaks. The musical soundtrack and the stunning camera work is combined to great effect, as exemplified in a haunting montage of the Vail Ski Patrol moving like wraiths through whitened woods to the accompaniment of the Counting Crows' "A Long December."
